I love to be in my garden, and I love being able to teach my boys about plants and how they grow. Being able to eat something you grew is a special feeling. Watching your work bloom and grow brings a special kind of joy.
My favorite thing to grow is anything that does not need my help. I always throw a few packets of wildflower seeds in wet spots I do not want to mow. I also throw them in my gardens to fill in the space that the grass will inevitably try to fill in. My son loves sunflowers, the really big ones, so we always plant them anywhere we have a spot that we don't think anything else is going to grow. We always throw the seeds in the cracks in the ground that open up at the beginning of summer.
I always say I will have some money and plant a few veggies. I always grow baby tomatoes, but I have grown cucumbers, okra, peppers, pumpkins, rosemary, thyme, peppermint, spearmint, basil, camomille, sage, lavender, onions, lettuce, and green beans. I love growing my own herbs so that I have them when I want them and don't waste money when having to buy a bundle at the store. We plan to plant some berry bushes at our new place, and my son is so excited.
